I’m Toby Mildon, and as you might have guessed I’m the founder of Mildon Ltd, a diversity and inclusion consultancy. What gets me up in the morning is working with HR directors and diversity and inclusion managers to enable them to hardwire inclusion into their business culture and systems. I’ve been around the big business block, having over a decade of management experience working everywhere from Accenture and British Airways to the BBC and Deloitte. My career actually began in technology (implementing IT systems and developing software) but it was when I was working for the BBC’s Chief Operating Officer in Design and Engineering that I got into diversity and inclusion. The COO was concerned about the gender imbalance within the BBC’s technology division and so I implemented our gender balance plan. My next step saw me take on a much bigger portfolio implementing diversity and inclusion change within radio and corporate services. Then I charged back into the corporate sector at Deloitte as I wanted to learn about the commercial case for diversity and inclusion and experience in culture change. I am particularly passionate about this area as I also have lived experience of exclusion having grown up with a genetic disability and, for example, been “banned” from one of my client’s offices because they thought I was a fire risk in my wheelchair.
